Let Him Eat Cake

Well, further to yesterday's post, it looks like life is about to get that much busier around here!

I went to meet with the owner's of the hotel and they were happy enough with what I had to say to offer me a trial run that night in the kitchen... And then they offered a breakfast trial run the next morning and dinner the next night too! I'm pretty happy because opportunities to walk into the kitchen of a well-established business are pretty hard to come by when you have absolutely zero professional experience or qualifications!

My first 'shift' (haha, look at me with all my new lingo) was hectic. Being the Australia Day long weekend the hotel was fully booked and, although it's a small hotel, when there's only two people in the kitchen, one of which knows very little about commercial kitchens, it was certainly classed as a baptism of fire!

But it was great! I did a bit of everything... I cooked, I plated, I expediated, I served and I washed a lot of dishes!! Things got crazy when all of the guests were in the dining room but then as quickly as it started, it began to slow down as the desserts went out and people started going back to their rooms. We set up for breakfast and I got to talk to the waitress and despite the fact that I felt like I was in her way all evening, she was super friendly.

The job must provide a pretty good workout! I woke up this morning with achy legs like I had run a half marathon yesterday instead of 10km I actually did! I guess that's what happens when your usual job requires a lot of sitting around on your backside!

I do my first breakfast this morning and I've been told it is much more relaxed even though there will be a full house again. Then I am back in tonight for another dinner and I have already got more shifts lined up for the next two weeks!! Wowzers, things certainly move fast in the hospitality world!

With the second best day of the year, Danny's birthday, rapidly approaching I have been keeping an eye out for ideas for his birthday 'party'. I say party but it's more of a gathering of his family where we all keep our fingers crossed that no one says something to upset someone else!

As always, I have ended up with a million and one cake ideas that I've managed to narrow down to a few options. Giving my inability to make even the smallest of decisions without umm-ing and ahh-ing about it for weeks on end I thought it would be fun to get the help of blogland! I have presented below the short list of potential 'suitors' and I would love your input on which one you think is best! Please cast your votes in the comments section.

Super cute mini burger cupcakes!
The original link for these also includes 'fries' made of biscuits and printables for authentic looking fast food packaging!

Polka Dot Cake!
I am super obsessed with cakes and cupcakes with things hidden inside! My version of this would be one or two layers max and filled with 'dots' in Danny's favourite colours.

Icecream Cupcakes!
I love this one because it looks awesome but would require minimum effort which would be great given that I am already booked in for 3 shifts in the two days before Danny's birthday!

Lego Construction!
Danny loves building and he loved (loves?) lego! Obviously he's not turning 5 (although he acts like it sometimes) so I am thinking I would do a big D. I might be over-committing myself by even considering this as a potential option, it could be quite time consuming but he would be super impressed!

Pina Colada Cupcakes!
These might seem a little unimpressive when compared to some of the fancier cakes above but Danny loves Pina Coladas (what a manly man I have here!) and even made mention of how great a pina colada flavoured cake would be for his birthday the other day.

I'd Like To Know...
Which cake should it be?

I have a preference but I'm not telling ;)

  1. I would go with the piña colada cupcakes, if that is what he likes. Every year I make my husband yellow cake with chocolate frosting. It is boring but he loves it. Go with what Danny wants.

  2. First off, congrats on the new gig! I think it's fantastic that you went out of your comfort zone to do something you'be veen considering for a long time.

As for the cake, given your current schedule and the fact that Danny has mentioned a pina colada flavoured cake, I would go with those cupcakes. The others are really cute but may not have the same amazing taste of the cupcakes :)

  3. I totally love the Polka Dot cake. But that's me and I'm not Danny so I'll go with everyone else and choose the Pina Colada cupcakes.

Great work on your new job.

  5. Just catching up on your posts because I do 99% of my blog reading (and blog writing) at my day job. I'm way too busy at home to keep up on this stuff. :)

Anyway, congrats on the new kitchen job and for the personal changes you've seen in the past year. I know all about things like that and I think running is the major change that spurred all the other changes in my life.

As to the cakes- I like the lego one the best personally, but they're all awesome. Have a great time making them and eating them!
